Merri Creek

An icon of Melbourne’s northern suburbs which in the past was significantly degraded due to local industry. In the last couple of decades a lot of work has been put in to restore some parts of the Creek. While it is still weedy and polluted, I overhead another woman saying how much better it looked. Storm water still drains in through huge concrete pipes. Revegetation along the sloped banks prove difficult even with the special weed mats that hold plantings in place.  The creek in some places is lined with stones - from the quarries that were filled with land-fill, and before that, produced bluestones for many of Brunswick’s roads and laneways (see Brunswick Plumbing). Ironically, water bottles that once provided someone with a drink of fresh water can be found strewn along the banks. Families, cyclist, joggers, dog-walkers use the Merri Creek Trail. The under-bridges attract graffiti artists and the homeless fringes of society.
